  • East Riding: Amy, oh Amy, you've got your own poem

    My Amy, oh my Amy,

You sure did get your man,

You sent Scott off, that sure was tough,

    Was that your female plan?

    You ran so fast backwards,

And showed that you were fit,

    And Amy, my dear Amy,

You showed you had true grit,

    And anyone who calls you,

They know not what they do

You blew that blooming whistle well,

Although you're only five foot two,

So Amy if you're here again,

And if you've got a wish

Give our boys no yellow cards,

And you will get a crate of fish!

  • East Riding: Thatcher was a shocker!

I READ the opinion piece about Thatcher (January 20), and found myself disagreeing with its headline that "those who disliked everything she stood for were still inspired by her".

The same is true about the textual remark that "whatever the political differences, the politicians from all sides could not fail to admire her".

  • East Riding: HULL FC: Bulls won't find Hull in friendly mood, says Houghton

DANNY Houghton says Hull FC will treat Lee Radford's testimonial game against Bradford Bulls just like a Super League game tomorrow.

And after the 36-18 derby defeat against Hull KR last week, Houghton says Peter Gentle's new-look side are determined to put in an improved performance.

"We are expecting Bradford to arrive wanting to end their pre-season on a good note so it will be a tough game," Houghton told the Mail.

"We are approaching this just like we would a Super League game and while it's a celebration for Radders it's also important for our preparations."

  • East Riding: '24-hour drinking has not helped situation'

COUNCILLOR David Rudd, who represents the East Riding on Humberside Police Authority, said: "It's a fact that many crimes are actually due to too much drinking and in some cases drug-taking as well.

"The Government is still looking at ways of trying to reduce the consumption of alcohol.

"The concern is a lot of it has come about since 24-hour drinking laws were brought in, that has certainly not helped the situation, it made it worse."

Mr Rudd insists solutions must be found.

He said: "We will be looking at it most seriously as a priority."

  • East Riding: Police to get tough on booze-fuelled trouble

ALCOHOL-fuelled trouble is to be targeted by police, who have increased weekend public order patrols during flashpoint periods.

In a bid to cut violence, antisocial behaviour and criminal damage, officers will also be taking a tough line on enforcing licensing rules.

Cheap alcohol and increasing tension caused by rising unemployment are among problems being blamed for booze-fuelled aggression.

Now the East Riding's top police officer has said reducing drink-related crime and disorder would be a priority this year.

  • East Riding: Decade saw Coronation and Everest summit conquered

THE 1950s saw rationing come to an end, the Coronation of the Queen and the summit of Mount Everest reached.

Only about a third of households had a washing machine and most people were still doing their washing by hand.

Many mothers did not work outside the home, instead concentrating on providing a warm and cosy environment for the family, while fathers tended to go out to work to provide an income.

Changes were made in homes as the post-war boom took hold.

About two thirds owned a television and programmes were shown in black and white.
