  • East Riding: Taxi passengers could be at risk from drivers who have committed crimes abroad

    TAXI passengers could be at risk from drivers who may be working in East Yorkshire despite having committed crimes abroad.

    Drivers in the UK have enhanced Criminal Records Bureau checks revealing previous convictions to prevent people from becoming drivers if they might be a danger to the public.

    But drivers working in Hull and the East Riding after coming from other countries are not always subject to the same background checks in their home countries – and police must sometimes wait months or years for foreign criminal records to arrive.

  • East Riding: MPs prepare to present petitions against caravan tax to Parliament

    EAST Yorkshire MPs today vowed to keep up the fight to overturn the caravan tax as the consultation on the proposed plans closed.

    Thousands of people have signed a petition calling on the Government to ditch the tax, which experts fear will lead to more than 7,000 job losses.

    Now, MPs are preparing to present their petitions to Parliament in the hope people power will convince ministers to drop the plans to introduce VAT on static caravans.

    It is thought they will be joined by MPs from around the country who will present similar petitions on the caravan tax on Tuesday.

    PETER Gentle says Hull FC's next four games will determine whether they can become genuine top-four contenders.

    Hull have identified the next block of matches before the international break as crucial to their plans for the season, with Gentle saying a positive points return is necessary to keep them in the race for a top-four finish.

    Hull return to action from a two-week break with a trip to London Broncos tomorrow before a derby game at the Magic Weekend, a home clash with St Helens and finishing with a trip to Wakefield.

  • East Riding: 'Changes at the top' to save Hull City Council £1m

    CITY council leader Councillor Steve Brady says changes will be made at the top of the authority to save at least £1 million.

    Confirmation of a pledge to reduce senior officer costs made immediately after this month's council elections was included in his annual address to the council earlier this week.

    Details of the shake-up have still to be made public but the Mail understands the proposals are part of a current 30-day internal consultation period involving senior staff.

  • East Riding: Man arrested after incident at secondary

    EAST RIDING: Police investigating allegations made against a teacher at an secondary school have made an arrest.

    A male teacher at South Holderness Technology College is currently suspended following a complaint by a female pupil.

    Police have now confirmed they have made an arrest following an alleged incident at the 1,800-pupil secondary.

    A spokeswoman for Humberside Police said: "A 47-year-old man has been arrested in connection with an incident at South Hold- erness Technology College.

  • East Riding: Jogging groups help women prepare for Race For Life

    HULL: Women taking part in this year's Race For Life are getting a helping hand from the city council.

    Hull City Council, in partnership with Cancer Research UK, has set up the two jogging groups that will offer free weekly one-hour sessions.

    The sessions will be held on Tuesday at 7pm at Costello Stadium in Anlaby Park Road, west Hull, and on Wednesday at 6.30pm at Woodford Leisure Centre in Holderness Road, east Hull.

  • East Riding: In Brief

    WEST HULL: Police are trying to track down relatives of a man who was found dead on a cycle track.

    Mark Anthony Jennison, aged 38, was found on the former railway line, which is now a path and cycle track, off Beverley Road.

    The track runs off the main street opposite The Station pub and was shut last Friday while police forensics teams searched the area.

    They were called to the track at 5.50pm on Friday, May 11, but did not release further details of the discovery, including the fact the death was not being treated as suspicious, until Monday.

  • East Riding: Toads against horses in battle for prestigious prize

    HULL: It'll be a case of toads versus horses in a bid for a top prestigious prize.

    Next week, Hull's famous art installation, the Larkin Toads, will go head-to-head with the Grand National for a major tourism award.

    The controversial street art project won over thousands of fans and has already clinched numerous accolades and awards.

    On Tuesday, the toads will feature as finalists in the Visit England Awards for Excellence 2012.

    BRANSHOLME: A store has opened a Diamond Jubilee book for the public to sign.

    Bon Marché, in the North Point Shopping Centre in Bransholme, is inviting members of the public to sign the book and leave a message for the Queen.

    The book is on the shop floor and available for people to sign seven days a week.

    It will be collected and delivered to the Queen for the Jubilee.

  • East Riding: Must produce good conduct certificate

    TO become a taxi driver, applicants must pass an enhanced Criminal Records Bureau check.

    This reveals previous convictions in the UK.

    People who have been resident in the UK for less than five years have the same check, but must also produce a certificate of good conduct from their home country.

    This vouches for their behaviour before they emigrated.

    But some countries carry out more scrupulous checks than others, police say.

  • East Riding: Internships on offer

    HULL: Businesses are being given the chance to tap into skills and support through a new internship scheme run by the University of Hull.

    Internships allow employers to get fresh views and skills from talented youngsters as well as assess an intern's capability before potentially making them an offer of permanent employment.

    Companies joining the programme can benefit from university support, and a subsidy of up to £1,200. Internships last up to 12 weeks and employers decide how much interns are paid on a case-by-case basis.
